Typically, the weather in May and June was pretty decent, but July was more or less a washout. Hopefully August will be a little warmer, drier and sunnier. Maybe it's time to make the Scottish summer holidays mainly in May and June and have the schools go back in mid July rather than mid August?

Anyway, to be underwhelmed is one of those words that must have seemed like a good idea at the time when it was invented in the 1950s as the opposite of overwhelm. However, it sounds a bit like a George W Bush made-up-by-mistake word, doesn't it? My favourite Bushism is the very useful word "misunderestimate" which actually serves a useful purpose to describe an underestimate that is so bad it counts as a culpable mistake and not just a slight misjudgment.

What I'll never understand is how you can be overwhelmed and underwhelmed, but not just "whelmed".

Do Typefaces Really Matter?

Well you can make up your own mind if typeface and fonts really matter after you read this BBC article about it: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-10689931

The consensus in Global Connects is that they certainly do. Some of the more humorous ones occur when the translator almost gets the right word or phrase, but doesn't realise the connotation in English, and produces an unintended double entendre or where the resulting translation is simply surreal.

Here are some examples:

Outside a Hong Kong tailor's shop: "Ladies may have a fit upstairs"

In an advertisement by a Hong Kong dentist: "Teeth extracted by the latest Methodists"

On the box of a clockwork toy made in Hong Kong: "Guaranteed to work throughout its useful life".

In an Acapulco hotel a sign read "The manager has personally passed all the water served here."

In a Japanese hotel room: Please to bathe inside the tub

Which is another way of saying: translation is more than just "putting the right words in the right order". There are many subtle cultural and linguistic issues of which a translator needs to be aware.

That is just one of the many benefits of using a professional translator rather than running text through a computer translation program.

A–Z of Rare Languages: E

Language: Extremaduran

ISO 639 code: ext

Countries/Regions: Spain

Speakers: 200,000 speakers

This language is spoken in the Extremadura autonomous region Extremadura in northern Spain. Did you know there are actually three different kinds of frost?

1. Rime Frost

Rime is ice formed when a damp, icy wind blows over flowers, branches and other surfaces. Rime frost looks like icing around the edge of petals and leaves, and only occurs when the temperatures are very low.

2. Hoar Frost

Hoar frost occurs when water vapour touches a very cold surface and freezes on it instantly. This can happen to the leaves and branches of plants, and will cover them with ice crystals that look like spiky fingers. It can also occur on other freezing surfaces such as soil and metal, and so can often be seen on cars. Hoar frost can occur at higher temperatures than rime frost – usually when the air temperature is around 0°C (32°F). However, the ground is usually much colder, and the air must be moist for the ice crystals to form.

3. Fern Frost

In particularly cold weather, fern frost may appear on windows. This happens when tiny water droplets (dew) first form on the cold glass. These then turn into ice and more moisture freezes on top. As this process continues, more ice crystals are formed and the frost develops into what looks like feathery fingers. Fern frost can create beautiful patterns of ice crystals, which often look leaf or fern like – hence the name.

"Jack Frost" is the personification of frost and was once thought to be an evil character who would leave his fingerprints on windowpanes when he spied on the people asleep inside...

Year of the Tiger

The Chinese new year begins tomorrow and it's the Year of the Tiger. It's perhaps also unexpected. You would think that an island nation that is cut off geographically from the rest of the world would also be cut off linguistically. But the very opposite is true, perhaps because of Britain's sea faring heritage and colonial past.

Indian food has been popular in Britain in some shape or form since Victorian times. Apparently Queen Victoria herself loved curried food. But it was after the War that Indian restaurants began to appear in the UK and the British people's love affair with Indian food really took off.

With it, a whole vocabulary of Indian cuisine came with it. Pakora is just one of those words, though interestingly "curry" isn't - it's purely a word the British used for spicy sauces and gravies.

What's your favourite Pakora and which restaurant do you recommend?

Safer Internet Day

As the calendar fills up with days for every cause under the sun, so we celebrate Safer Internet Day today, 9 February.

This is an initiative to highlight the need to monitor our children's use of the internet and to educate them about the possible dangers posed by strangers they might come across online.

Seems a worthwhile thing to highlight, but I have no idea why 9 February was chosen. W. Fowler, written in 1908.

Fowler begin's his book with these words:

Any one who wishes to become a good writer should endeavour, before he allows himself to be tempted by the more showy qualities, to be direct, simple, brief, vigorous, and lucid.
He then lists five principles we can follow to bring this about.

Prefer the familiar word to the far-fetched

Prefer the concrete word to the abstract

Prefer the single word to the circumlocution

Prefer the short word to the long

Prefer the Saxon word to the Romance.

According to Fowler, the above list is given in order of importance, with the most important first. The last he gives as a kind of summary that more often than not will achieve the other four principles if followed. Let's look at each of these briefly.

Prefer the familiar word to the far-fetched

This is simply another way of saying that we should use simple, common words wherever possible and avoid showy unusual words or jargon when it's only there to show our readers how educated we are rather than to communicate effectively with them.

For example, don't write "That is unlikely to transpire" when you can say "That is unlikely to happen." Don't write "a protuberance" when you can say "a bump."

Prefer the concrete word to the abstract

This is actually Fowler's way of saying that we should write English that has the right number of nouns and verbs to make our point. He gives an example:

"No year passes now without evidence of the truth of the statement that the work of government is becoming increasingly difficult."

The same meaning can be achieved by changing some of the needless nouns in italics "evidence", "truth", "statement":

"Every passing year shows how true it is that the work of government is becoming increasingly difficult."

Prefer the single word to the circumlocution

This is easier to explain. We should use a single word rather than a string of words to say exactly the same thing.

For example: "Few candidates showed a thorough knowledge of the text and in many cases the answers lacked care." Why not just say "...and many answers lacked care"?

Or again: "The athlete has been made the recipient of a silver medal." Why not just say "received a silver medal"?

Prefer the short word to the long

This goes without saying. Why write "temperamental" when we just mean "moody"?

Prefer the Saxon word to the Romance

This just means that generally English words of Saxon derivation are more familiar and straightforward than their cousins derived from Latin or modern Romance languages.

For example: why write "the climatic conditions" when we can just say "the weather"?

Or again: why say "a number of instances" instead of "a number of times".

Some of the previous examples also use this principle.

State of the Roads 2

I see that the number of potholes on Scotland's roads in the wake of the recent snowy and icy weather has now reached the news headlines on the BBC website:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/8466284.stm

Not much good news in this. It looks as if Glasgow's potholes have spread like a rash and the ones that were there already have got bigger and deeper.

If you live in Glasgow, here's the link to contact the Council about this: http://www.glasgow.gov.uk/en/Residents/GettingAround/RALF/

Apparently, the figures in England and Wales are that the pothole backlog will take between 11 and 16 years to sort. It depends on the size of what's being translated!

If the translation is huge in terms of the number of words involved, sometimes taking a fair bit of time to complete it is "getting it done urgently".

However, none of the timescales we've ever been involved with compares with the delivery time of 28 years that two professors took to translate an 8-volume American work on the theory of literature into Chinese.

The project began in 1981 when Yang Qishen began to translate Rene Wellek's massive work The Theory of Literature. Many new words come from the United States, and from fast-changing sectors such as computing (e.g. internet, blog) and politics (hate crime, Islamophobia, Blairite).

Universal Children's Day

Since 1954, the United Nations has designated November 20th as "Universal Children's Day". But I was wrong. I heard the other day that Procurator Fiscal's are still using this crime in charges where someone is attacked in their home. Presumably the reason is that to assault someone in their home is a more serious charge - an aggravation of a normal assault charge. The rationale for this crime makes sense - a person's house is supposed to be where you can feel safe, and there is added trauma to suffer an assault in your own home.

Any other weird and wonderful words you can think of that deserve to be more widely known?

Busy Busy

It's been a busy period in our office during the past week or so. In the media, and I suspect to the "person in the street," the terms appear to be used interchangeably. Both terms are often used for a person who speaks two languages to help two people to communicate who could otherwise not speak to each other. I emphasise "speak" deliberately.

Now according to the dictionaries, this is acceptable colloquially.

The Chambers Dictionary defines "to translate" as "to express (a word, speech, written text, etc) in another language, closely preserving the meaning of the original" and a "translator" as a person who does this.

It also defines an "interpreter" as "someone who translates foreign speech as the words are spoken and relays the translation orally".

Notice that in these definitions a translator can work with written text or speech, but an interpreter only works with speech.

In the translation industry, we use slightly narrower definitions of translator and interpreter and only use translator for someone who translates written text from one language into another and only use interpreter for someone who interprets speech from one language into another.

You might find this distinction useful if you are looking to engage the services of a translator or an interpreter in the future.

Gaelic Plans for Edinburgh

Did you see the story on the news A fever, a week in bed and a course of strong antibiotics later, he has recovered and returned to blogland today.

Interesting word "bacteria". It comes from the Greek word bakterion which means "little stick". The word was coined by a German biologist, Christian Gottfried Ehrenberg, in 1838. The word refers to the shape of many bacteria when viewed under a microscope.

National Poetry Day

As a translation and interpreting agency, language is obviously of crucial importance to us. That's why we take an interest in National Poetry Day, which displays language at its best and most concentrated form: poetry.

The theme for this year's National Poetry Day is "Heroes and Heroines". On the official website you can read the poets chosen by a number of celebrities as their "poetry heroes and heroines".

Personally, I'd like to nominate the Scottish poet, Hugh MacDiarmid (b. Christopher Murray Grieve, 1892-1978) as a poetry and linguistic hero. MacDiarmid was one of the key figures in renaissance of interest in Scots as a literary language in the 20th century.

The following is one of his beautiful little gems:

The Bonnie Broukit Bairn

Mars is braw in crammasy,
Venus in a green silk goun,
The auld mune shak's her gowden feathers,
Their starry talk's a wheen o' blethers,
Nane for thee a thochtie sparin'
Earth, thou bonnie broukit bairn!
- But greet, an' in your tears ye'll drown
The haill clanjamfrie!

Roughly translated into English this would be:

The Beautiful Grimy Child

Mars is great in crimson red,
Venus in a green silk dress,
The old moon shakes her golden feathers,
Their starry talk's a lot of nonsense,
None for you even sparing a thought,
Earth, you beautiful grimy child!
- But cry, and in your tears you'll drown
The whole lot of them!

Word of the Day: Palimpsest

palimpsest noun 1 a parchment or other ancient writing surface re-used after the original content has been erased. 2 a monumental brass that has been turned over and inscribed on the reverse.
ETYMOLOGY: 17c: from Greek palin again + psaein to rub smooth.

'All history was a palimpsest, scraped clean and re-inscribed exactly as often as was necessary.'
